PLDT’s Smart Communications launches native video calling service using ViLTE technology

07 October 2025

Smart Communications, the wireless division of PLDT, announced the launch of a new video calling service powered by Video Over LTE (ViLTE), enabling users to make high-quality video calls directly through their regular voice dialling, without the need for third-party apps. The service is now available for both Smart and TNT brands, aiming to improve the user experience for bandwidth-heavy communications.

The ViLTE service allows subscribers with unlimited voice packages to initiate video calls that are billed to their voice plan. Recipients, whether or not they are Smart or TNT subscribers, can receive these calls without incurring charges. The service is compatible with Wi-Fi calling as well, providing additional flexibility.

Since ViLTE relies on VoLTE technology, both callers and receivers need compatible smartphones with VoLTE and ViLTE capabilities. Users must update their Android devices to the latest software versions and ensure that VoLTE and ViLTE functions are enabled to use the service.

Smart emphasizes that ViLTE offers advantages over popular over-the-top (OTT) apps like WhatsApp, including better battery efficiency and more stable connections even in crowded environments. Additionally, the service allows users to multitask during calls — browsing, streaming, or using other apps — without interruption.

Lloyd R. Manaloto, Smart’s Vice President for Fixed Voice Products, stated that the company is continuously expanding its 4G and 5G networks to support data-intensive applications such as video calls, live streaming, and mobile gaming.

“With ViLTE, we are enhancing everyday communication by empowering our customers with a clearer and more immersive way to connect,” said Manaloto.
