MobiFone and Rakuten Symphony to pilot Open RAN 4G and 5G networks in Vietnam

12 June 2025

MobiFone Corporation has announced a strategic partnership with open RAN innovator Rakuten Symphony through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a joint pilot project deploying open RAN technology for both 4G and 5G networks in Vietnam.

This collaboration aims to position MobiFone as one of Southeast Asia’s pioneering mobile operators to adopt open RAN, demonstrating the technology’s viability and efficiency for expanding and modernizing mobile networks in the region. The pilot project will serve as a critical step in validating open RAN solutions for commercial deployment in Vietnam, supporting the country’s digital infrastructure growth.

Rakuten Symphony will supply open RAN solutions and leverage its ecosystem partners to provide technical expertise throughout the pilot phase. Meanwhile, MobiFone will allocate the necessary cell and core sites, ensuring they are fully prepared to host open RAN equipment, and will facilitate the deployment of a mobile core to enable the project’s execution.

“MobiFone has identified open RAN as a strategic pathway to gradually establish technological autonomy in next-generation mobile networks. This collaboration will extend far beyond a mere proof of concept. It will pave the way for deeper, more comprehensive partnerships in the near future,” said Vinh Tuan Bao, Deputy General Director of MobiFone.
