BSNL and Viasat demonstrate D2D communications

15 November 2024

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has become the first telecom operator to launch a satellite-to-device service in India.

BSNL is collaborating with Viasat to provide this service. The companies successfully demonstrated satellite-powered two-way messaging services for attendees at the India Mobile Congress 2024 in October.

"BSNL launches India's 1st Satellite-to-Device service! Seamless connectivity now reaches India's remotest corners," said the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

In the trial, Viasat demonstrated two-way messaging and emergency SOS messaging using a commercial Android smartphone enabled for non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity. Messages were sent nearly 36,000km to one of Viasat's geostationary L-band satellites.
