The first planned DC campus will be in Cyberjaya, with two data centres on over three acres of land, delivering close to 20MW of IT load.

The first data centre, Cyberjaya DC.2, will be a Rated-4 facility focused on serving local and international banks, financial institutions, government agencies and other mission-critical industry segments. Cyberjaya DC.2 is scheduled to be ready for service in 2024.

The second data centre, STT Kuala Lumpur 1, will serve the hyperscale segment. Construction of the first phase is expected to commence in the coming months and is scheduled for completion by 2025.
STT GDC says both are designed to comply with global standards of security and sustainability. It also said the JV is also actively looking at opportunities to expand further within Malaysia as demand for digital infrastructure grows.

The JV itself is designed as a DDI-FDI partnership that combines STT GDC’s global expertise and wider market access with Basis Bay’s understanding of the local landscape and regulatory nuances, as well as its local relationships. Basis Bay currently offers colocation and data centre managed services from two data centres in Glenmarie and Cyberjaya.

“This partnership is strategically positioned to meet the volume and scale requirements of hyperscalers while simultaneously delivering the premium, super high availability needs of financial institutions and the like,” said Basis Bay’s executive chairman Dato’ Praba Thiagarajah. “This partnership will also emphasise the much-needed local participation and control, thus addressing data sovereignty concerns.”
