Vietnam to switch off 2G in 2026

Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has announced plans to completely turn off 2G services in the country by September 2026.

The MIC has laid out a roadmap, with a full shutdown of 2G services on land scheduled for 16 September 2024. However, 2G services will still be available in the Trường Sa (Spratly) and Hoàng Sa (Paracel) archipelagos until 15 September 2026.

DoT calls for quantum communications R&D

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has called on the telecoms sector to submit proposals for an R&D programme to accelerate quantum communications networks.

The DoT plans to establish Quantum Standardization and Testing Labs that will serve as innovation hubs for quantum technology developers, test equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers. The DoT has invited operators to submit applications to participate in these labs.

India’s operators build new sites to support Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2024

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Reliance Jio, and Bharti Airtel have added new mobile sites to ensure Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2024 pilgrims get seamless connectivity in their journey.

In addition, new SIM distribution centres were opened for the pilgrims so that they could pick a new SIM of their choice to get mobile connectivity.

Singtel and SK Telecom to build next-gen networks

Singtel and SK Telecom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build next-generation telecommunications networks over the next two years.

The collaboration aims to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI), orchestration tools, and deepen the domain knowledge of network virtualisation and other technologies, central to laying the groundwork for 6G.
