Maxis and Nokia launch Malaysia’s first quantum-safe networking solution

Malaysian telecommunications provider Maxis has announced a strategic partnership with Nokia to introduce what it claims is the country’s first quantum-safe networking (QSN) solution tailored for government agencies and businesses.

This managed service encrypts data during transmission directly at the optical layer, providing robust security against emerging threats from quantum computing, such as the “harvest now, decrypt later” attack, where encrypted data intercepted today could be decrypted in the future once quantum computers become more capable.

Maxis emphasized that the QSN service is particularly designed for critical sectors with stringent requirements for data integrity and sovereignty, including banking and financial services, healthcare, and the public sector. The solution aims to safeguard sensitive information against the anticipated vulnerabilities posed by advancements in quantum technology, ensuring future-proof security for vital digital assets.

Maxis’s chief enterprise business officer, Prateek Pashine, highlighted that QSN enhances the security of the telco’s fibre connectivity offerings, especially its Data Centre Connect service, which supports enterprises, cloud providers, and financial institutions that depend on high-capacity fibre links and data centre interconnects. Pashine stressed the importance of securing current data against future risks amid rising cyber threats, asserting that the integration of Nokia’s carrier-grade platforms with quantum-safe encryption delivers a resilient and forward-looking security layer without compromising on speed or reliability.

Ming Kin Ngiam, Nokia’s head of Southeast Asia South for network infrastructure, added that this collaboration enables Malaysian businesses to future-proof their operations by combining Nokia’s advanced technology with Maxis’s extensive network reach, ensuring that security keeps pace with the evolving digital landscape. The introduction of this quantum-safe network solution marks a significant step towards strengthening Malaysia’s cybersecurity posture in an era increasingly dominated by sophisticated cyber threats and emerging quantum computing capabilities.
