U Mobile launches standalone Ultra5G network

20 August 2025

Malaysian telco U Mobile officially launched its standalone 5G network, dubbed Ultra5G, in two key locations on Monday, with an initial emphasis on delivering high-quality 5G experiences within indoor environments.

Having secured the rights to operate Malaysia’s second 5G network in November 2024, U Mobile rolled out Ultra5G at its headquarters in Berjaya Times Square (BTS) and at Penang Bridge 1, where coverage is supported by two dedicated 5G cell sites.

During the launch event, U Mobile showcased several demonstrations highlighting Ultra5G’s capabilities, including a 4K livestream from a roller coaster at Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, an immersive mixed-reality experience, and advanced 5G network slicing technology.

Woon Ooi Yuen, CTO of U Mobile, stated that the company plans to focus initial deployments at strategic locations such as airports, hospitals, convention centres, and other high-traffic indoor and outdoor venues across Malaysia.

“With deployment ahead of schedule, U Mobile is doubling down on indoor coverage to ensure the widest and deepest 5G experience in the country,” said Yuen.

Yuen also revealed that over the next 12 months, U Mobile aims to deploy 5G infrastructure in more than 170 buildings nationwide, expanding to over 600 buildings within four years. This deployment will be supported by recent partnerships with EdgePoint Infrastructure and OCK Telco Infra, the latter being a subsidiary of OCK Group, which will serve as preferred in-building infrastructure providers for U Mobile’s 5G rollout.

U Mobile’s target is to achieve 80% 5G coverage in populated areas by the second half of 2026, bringing widespread high-speed connectivity to Malaysia’s urban and high-traffic zones.
