Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison accelerates sustainability with Nokia Energy Efficiency

09 July 2025

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) has implemented Nokia’s Energy Efficiency solution — part of Nokia’s Autonomous Networks portfolio — to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions across its national radio access network (RAN).

This strategic move underscores IOH’s commitment to environmental responsibility and its ongoing transformation into an AI-powered, innovative tech company.

Utilizing advanced AI and machine learning algorithms, Nokia Energy Efficiency analyses real-time traffic data to automatically adjust or deactivate idle or unused radio equipment during periods of low network demand. The solution’s intelligent thermal management reduces cooling energy needs, further enhancing operational efficiency. Delivered through a SaaS model, it eliminates large upfront investments and simplifies deployment, allowing rapid rollout within weeks without the need for on-site software maintenance or updates.

This AI-driven, multi-vendor energy management system achieves significant reductions in energy costs and carbon footprint without compromising network performance or customer experience. The deployment follows a successful pilot, after which Nokia extended its Energy Efficiency solution across IOH’s entire Nokia RAN footprint in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Central, and East Java.

“As data consumption continues to grow, so does our responsibility to manage resources wisely. This collaboration reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, using AI not only to optimize performance but also to reduce emissions and energy use across our network,” said Desmond Cheung, CTO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.

Indosat’s sustainability efforts have earned regional recognition, including being the first Southeast Asian operator to attain ISO 50001 certification for energy management. The Nokia partnership builds on this foundation, supporting IOH’s broader digital transformation from a traditional telecom operator into an AI-driven ‘TechCo,’ leveraging automation, cloud platforms, and intelligent network management.

“We are proud to support Indosat in fulfilling its sustainability goals and strengthening its position both locally and globally. Nokia Energy Efficiency exemplifies our ongoing investment in R&D to help operators optimize energy savings while maintaining top network performance,” said Henrique Vale, VP of Nokia’s Cloud and Network Services for APAC.

Nokia’s Autonomous Networks portfolio, including its Autonomous Networks Fabric, offers a unified intelligence layer that integrates observability, analytics, security, and automation across diverse network domains. Powered by Agentic AI, these solutions enable operators to operate networks as adaptive, holistic systems — reducing costs, accelerating deployment, and delivering superior customer experiences.
