This deployment aims to bring widespread high-speed connectivity to nearly all parts of the city, including shopping centres, residential neighbourhoods, industrial zones, tourist attractions, and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.
Telkomsel initially launched 5G services in Makassar in June 2021. Since then, the company’s network director, Indra Mardiatna, reported that 5G device penetration in the city reached 21% of total devices as of April 2025. On average, users in Indonesia consume around 15 GB of data per month, with peak download speeds reaching up to 514Mbps.
“The 5G ecosystem in Makassar has become more mature, so the expansion of coverage massively and continuously without interruption is crucial,” said Mardiatna.
He also highlighted Telkomsel’s plans to accelerate 5G rollout in other major cities and districts across Papua, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan, once the local ecosystems are sufficiently advanced to support further deployment.
