04 September 2024

Nxtra Data Limited (Nxtra by Airtel) has reported increased use of renewable energy in its operations, rising to 220,541MWh, a 41% increase compared to the previous year.

Despite a 25% increase in power consumption, the company achieved a 4% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to FY21, Nxtra by Airtel said while unveiling its second edition of the sustainability report for FY 2023-24. This equates to 163,408 tCO2e reduction in emissions over the course of the year.

The sustainability report highlights Nxtra's focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) parameters. Nxtra has also made progress in diversity, increasing the representation of women in its workforce by 30%. To further its commitment to gender diversity, the company launched the NxtWave initiative, which aims to double the number of women in engineering roles by FY26, the company said.

"The future of data centres lies in our ability to harmonise intelligent infrastructure with sustainability. Integrating innovative ESG initiatives into our business model and operations has been integral to our data centre build and operations from day one. As our sustainability report highlights, we have made consistent progress across all three sustainability parameters—environmental, social, and governance—during the year and will continue to keep this as our core focus area,” said Nxtra by Airtel in a release.

Safety and sustainability remain top priorities, with 4.3 million safe man-hours recorded in construction and 99% of procurement sourced locally.

Under the guiding principle ‘Intelligent by Design and Sustainable by Choice,’ Nxtra aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2031.
