Indosat completes core network project

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison has completed a large core network consolidation project in Jakarta that saw its packet-switched core network transformed to a cloud-native core.

The project – conducted in collaboration with Huawei – covers 26 core locations across Indonesia and took an ‘unprecedented’ 14 months to complete.

Indosat deployed Huawei’s bare metal container and dual-engine container solution for the project. Huawei says the dual-engine container solution supports large-scale commercial use of 5G core networks by managing both virtual machines (VMs) and containers in a unified infrastructure platform. That enables Indosat to introduce containers through capacity expansion quickly, which in turn speeds up service rollouts, the company said.

Indosat also said the resulting core network transformation will improve the user experience for its 100 million customers across the country, especially those living in rural and remote areas. For example, Indosat said residents of Kalimantan will enjoy a faster average downlink speed by 15% while the average round trip time will be reduced by 11% for Facebook usage. Meanwhile, customers in Central Java are also experiencing a better performance while using the Internet for games and live videos, the telco said.

“With the completion of this initiative, we believe we can consistently deliver a marvellous experience to our customers,” said Indosat director and CTO Desmond Cheung.
