Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced plans to initiate its 5G rollout in the upcoming months as part of a broader strategy to enhance its network capabilities.
Currently, the company is focused on expanding its 4G infrastructure, with an ambitious goal of deploying 100,000 sites by June 2025. As of now, BSNL has activated over 75,000 sites, with more than 80,000 installations in place. The operator is confident that it will meet its target and have all 100,000 sites fully operational by the specified deadline.
India's Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has indicated that the aim is to have these sites operational by May-June 2025, with a transition from 4G to 5G anticipated to commence in June. This phased approach involves not only the completion of the current 4G rollout but also the groundwork for the future 5G network.
After reaching the milestone of 100,000 4G sites, BSNL plans to further extend its network capabilities, likely collaborating with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for additional deployments. However, the existing site count remains insufficient to comprehensively cover India's vast geographical landscape.
On the 5G front, BSNL is preparing to conduct tests of its 5G standalone (5G SA) technology in Delhi. The operator has also established a strategy for upgrading its existing 4G infrastructure to 5G non-standalone (5G NSA) using straightforward software updates, with TCS facilitating the transition. Tata Group has committed to ensuring that the shift to 5G NSA will be seamless for users.
BSNL distinguishes itself as the sole Indian telecom operator deploying indigenous 4G technology, aligning with the government’s focus on self-reliance and national security. This decision to utilize domestically developed technology underscores India's commitment to fostering innovation within its telecom sector, paving the way for a robust and independent telecommunications landscape.
Through these initiatives, BSNL aims to not only enhance its service offerings but also contribute significantly to India's digital transformation and connectivity goals.
