Microsoft to launch first cloud region in Malaysia by mid-2025

24 March 2025

Microsoft has announced plans to establish its first cloud region in Malaysia, comprising three data centres located in the greater Kuala Lumpur area.

This initiative is part of the company's significant investment of US$2.2 billion in Malaysia, aimed at enhancing the country's capabilities in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, confirmed that the data centres, collectively named Malaysia West Cloud, are set to begin operations in the second quarter of 2025. While specific details regarding the expected capacity of these data centres were not provided, the launch represents a substantial commitment to the region's digital infrastructure.

The establishment of the cloud region is expected to empower local businesses and organizations, enabling them to innovate more rapidly and securely. This aligns with Malaysia's strategic goal of becoming a leading hub for cloud and AI growth within Southeast Asia.

Microsoft’s investment, which was revealed in May 2024, is designed to bolster its cloud and AI services in Malaysia over the next four years. The company anticipates that this initiative will generate approximately US$10.9 billion in revenue and create over 37,000 jobs in the country, thereby significantly contributing to the local economy and workforce development.
